PTZOptics Move SE 30X with OBS: an easy church setup guide.

This is the PTZ camera El Roi Digital uses. It has worked very well for our ministry production needs, but getting the network video, camera control, presets, and audio path organized took some learning. This guide walks through the setup we wish we had at the beginning.

The PTZOptics Move SE 30X is a good fit for a sanctuary where the camera must reach a platform, pulpit, choir, or worship leader from the back or side of the room. We value the 30X optical zoom, 1080p60 output, PoE support, network video, saved positions, and the option to control it with free software instead of purchasing a joystick immediately.

Its flexibility is also what makes the first setup feel technical. The camera must be placed on the network correctly, OBS must point to the right video source, and church audio must be routed intentionally. Once those pieces are documented, the weekly operation becomes much easier.

Why we use the PTZOptics Move SE 30X for ministry video

We wanted a camera that could stay installed, reach a distant platform without a volunteer standing behind it, move to repeatable positions, and feed OBS over the church network. The Move SE 30X has handled that role well for us.

Useful 30X optical zoom

The longer optical reach is valuable when a camera must be placed well behind the congregation or away from the platform.

Saved positions

Presets let volunteers recall a pulpit, wide platform, worship leader, or announcement shot instead of rebuilding every frame.

One-cable potential

With a suitable PoE network switch, Ethernet can provide power, network video, and camera control through one installed cable.

Flexible video paths

The camera supports IP, NDI, USB, HDMI, and SDI workflows, so a church can change its production approach without replacing the camera.

This is still a 1080p camera rather than a 4K model. We consider that a reasonable tradeoff when the church values reliable Full HD streaming, long optical zoom, and manageable bandwidth more than 4K acquisition.

What you need before connecting the Move SE 30X to OBS

  • The PTZOptics Move SE 30X camera and its included power supply, or a compatible 802.3af PoE switch.
  • A tested Cat 6 or Cat 6a Ethernet cable from the camera to the church router or network switch.
  • An OBS computer connected to the same local network, preferably by wired Gigabit Ethernet.
  • OBS Studio installed from the official OBS website.
  • A separate audio feed from the church mixer through USB, an audio interface, or another documented input path.
  • The camera's IR remote for initial setup and a computer that can open the camera's web interface.
  • A plan for camera control: PTZOptics software, OBS controls, a game controller, or a physical PTZ joystick.
Keep the first setup simple:

Start with one wired camera, one stable RTSP feed, and one separate mixer feed. Do not add NDI plugins, multiple cameras, auto-tracking, and scene-triggered presets until the basic video and audio path has passed a complete rehearsal.

Connect the PTZOptics camera to your church network

The Move SE is not a Wi-Fi camera. PTZOptics recommends a direct Ethernet connection to a switch, router, or computer. The camera can still work with a wirelessly connected computer if both devices are on the same subnet, but we recommend wiring the OBS computer too.

  1. Mount and power the camera. Use the power adapter or connect the Ethernet cable to an 802.3af PoE switch. Let the camera finish its startup movement before continuing.
  2. Connect Ethernet to the network. Run Cat 6 or Cat 6a from the camera to the router or Gigabit switch used by the OBS computer.
  3. Confirm DHCP mode. Current third-generation PTZOptics cameras default to DHCP. If needed, use the IR remote sequence #, *, 4 to place the camera in DHCP mode, restart it, and request a new address.
  4. Find the camera's IP address. Check the router's connected-device list, use the PTZOptics discovery or management software, or follow the current manual. Write the address down.
  5. Open the camera web interface. On the OBS computer, enter the camera IP address into a browser. Follow the current manual for sign-in, then replace any default credentials with a secure ministry password.
  6. Reserve the address. Create a DHCP reservation in the router so the camera receives the same IP address after reboots. This prevents OBS and the control software from losing the camera later.
  7. Verify the main video stream. Confirm that the camera's primary stream is enabled and set to a resolution and frame rate that match the church's OBS workflow.

PTZOptics recommends Gigabit switch ports for network video. The camera and OBS computer should be on the same subnet unless a network administrator has intentionally configured routing, VLANs, and multicast behavior.

Add the PTZOptics Move SE 30X to OBS with RTSP

RTSP is the easiest network-video path to explain because OBS can receive it as a Media Source without requiring an NDI source plugin. Replace CAMERA-IP below with the address assigned to your camera.

  1. Open the correct OBS scene. Create or select the scene that should contain the camera.
  2. Add a Media Source. In the Sources panel, click the plus button, select Media Source, choose Create New, name it clearly, and select OK.
  3. Turn off Local File. In the Media Source properties, clear the Local File checkbox so the network input field appears.
  4. Enter the RTSP address. Type rtsp://CAMERA-IP:554/1 with the camera's real IP address in place of CAMERA-IP.
  5. Save and wait for the feed. Select OK and allow several seconds for the video to appear. Resize the source to the canvas and lock it after framing.
  6. Test a local recording. Record movement, preaching, and worship lighting. Check picture stability, latency, frame rate, and lip sync before connecting a public stream.

If Media Source does not show the picture

Try the same RTSP address in VLC Media Player. If VLC also fails, the problem is probably the camera address, stream settings, firewall, cable, or network rather than the OBS scene. If VLC works but OBS does not, recreate the Media Source and confirm the full address was entered without spaces.

The camera does not provide a built-in room microphone

This point matters. The Move SE 30X does not give you a useful built-in sanctuary microphone through the network cable. PTZOptics lists a separate 3.5 mm line-level input, which is not the same as an onboard microphone.

For most churches, the cleaner and easier approach is to bring the church mix into OBS separately:

  1. Create a stream mix at the console. Include speech, worship inputs, and enough room or congregation sound to make the online mix feel natural.
  2. Connect the mixer to the OBS computer. Use the mixer's supported USB connection or a compatible audio interface.
  3. Add that device in OBS. Select it under Audio Input Capture or the OBS audio settings, then disable any duplicate computer or webcam microphone.
  4. Check synchronization. Record clapping or spoken consonants and compare sound to picture. If necessary, add a measured sync offset to the audio source.
  5. Monitor the program. Use headphones at the streaming computer and review the stream from a second device outside the sanctuary sound system.

The camera's line input may be useful in a carefully designed embedded-audio workflow, but do not assume that plugging in Ethernet automatically sends the church sound mix into OBS. Choose and test the audio path separately.

Control the PTZOptics camera without buying a joystick

A physical joystick is not required to begin. PTZOptics offers free camera-control options for Windows and Mac, including a standalone control application, OBS-oriented controls, and dockable controllers. These can handle pan, tilt, zoom, image controls, and saved presets over the local network.

Simple software-control setup

  1. Update camera firmware carefully. Check the PTZOptics firmware finder and follow the product instructions during the week, never immediately before a service.
  2. Download control software from PTZOptics. Use the official camera-control or OBS plugin page rather than an unofficial download mirror.
  3. Add the camera IP address. In the application's camera or multi-camera settings, enter the reserved IP address used by OBS.
  4. Select Camera 1 and test movement. Begin with slow pan, tilt, and zoom speeds so volunteers do not overshoot the platform.
  5. Create named presets. Save the camera positions the ministry actually uses and include those preset names in the Sunday operator sheet.

Our view is straightforward: the digital control software is perfectly reasonable when a church mainly recalls presets and does not want to purchase a joystick controller. A physical joystick becomes more valuable when an operator follows people live, runs multiple PTZ cameras, or needs very smooth motion throughout the service.

Create a camera preset plan volunteers can remember

Do not hand volunteers twenty unlabeled presets. Build a short service-oriented list and keep the numbering the same in the PTZ software, OBS notes, and printed operator guide.

Recall presets before they are needed whenever possible. Fast visible pan-and-zoom movements can distract online viewers. Use the wide shot as a safe transition while the operator moves another camera or prepares a tighter position.

NDI is another option, but RTSP is the simpler starting point

The current PTZOptics Move SE documentation lists NDI HX3 support. NDI can simplify source discovery and carry network video through an NDI-aware production workflow, but OBS needs the current compatible NDI integration and runtime before an NDI Source appears.

For a first installation, we recommend proving the camera with RTSP before adding NDI dependencies. If the church already uses NDI, install the current official tools, confirm the camera and computer are on the correct network, and test discovery, bandwidth, latency, and audio behavior during a full rehearsal.

Do not install an old OBS NDI plugin simply because an older tutorial links to it. Confirm compatibility with the church's current OBS version and back up the working configuration before changes.

Troubleshooting the Move SE 30X in OBS

OBS shows no picture

Open the camera IP in a browser, test rtsp://CAMERA-IP:554/1 in VLC, confirm the main stream is enabled, and check firewall rules.

The camera IP keeps changing

Create a DHCP reservation in the router and update OBS and the control software to the reserved address.

Video stutters or freezes

Use wired Gigabit connections, inspect the cable and switch, reduce unnecessary network traffic, and test a lower stream setting before blaming OBS.

Control software cannot move it

Confirm the control application uses the same camera IP and that both devices are on the same subnet. Close conflicting control sessions while testing.

Picture and sound do not match

Measure the delay with a local recording and add an OBS sync offset to the separate mixer input rather than guessing during a public stream.

There is no camera audio

That is expected if no source is connected to the camera's line input. Route the church mixer into OBS separately and monitor that source.

Change one variable at a time:

First prove the camera's web interface, then prove RTSP in VLC, then add the source to OBS, then add audio, and only then add software control or NDI. This sequence makes it much easier to identify the actual failure.
