Take FlightTrusting God's faithfulnessConsider this when age-specific teaching and conversations about trusting God through real difficulties match your ministry goal.
Team demands: Moderate; increases with the number of age groups.
Main tradeoff: The director's bag is only the planning entry point. Build a separate resource order for every age group you will serve.
Space & supplies: Decide on rooms and rotations before creating aviation scenery. Paper route signs and borrowed travel props can keep decorating manageable.
After VBS: Send families a short set of questions about trust and prayer. Avoid suggesting that faith makes every difficult situation disappear immediately.

CraveWhat Jesus gives; relationships and discoveryConsider this when your team enjoys experiments and can give visiting children a consistent small-group leader throughout the week.
Team demands: Moderate to high; crew leaders and station leaders are different roles.
Main tradeoff: Allow for station supplies and thoughtful allergy, scent, food, and sensory accommodations. A food theme does not require every activity to use food.
Space & supplies: Keep the food-lab focal point simple and put clear traffic flow ahead of large props. Check which activity items are samples and which need an order per child.
After VBS: Let crew leaders give personal invitations to the next children's activity, with a short family reading plan through Luke.

Spy UChristian belief and discernmentConsider this for a deliberate emphasis on Christian doctrine, with teachers who are comfortable handling children's questions about belief.
Team demands: Moderate to high teaching preparation; allow time for age-level questions.
Main tradeoff: Review the actual lessons and explanations of the Trinity. Abstract ideas need age-appropriate language and respectful discussion of other beliefs.
Space & supplies: Mission desks and code stations can use ordinary office supplies. Rehearse drama only if it belongs in your event plan.
After VBS: Offer a brief parent–child Bible questions series so the conversations continue beyond VBS.

On the BoardwalkFriendship with Jesus and everyday relationshipsOne Room VBS Kit: $109.99
Ages 5–12, single-room format. Product page lists March 2, 2027 availability. Separate from the Ultimate bundle; confirm supervision needs independently.
View the separate One Room kit (opens in a new tab)
Consider this when belonging, friendship, and welcoming new families are central outreach goals. Review One Room when room or rotation capacity is limited.
Team demands: Moderate for the full program; assembly and puppet roles need rehearsal.
Main tradeoff: Compare the One Room and Ultimate contents carefully. A simplified curriculum model does not replace your church's child-safeguarding and supervision requirements.
Space & supplies: A few pier signs and simple game fronts can establish the boardwalk setting. Put your best decorating effort into the gathering space rather than building a full carnival.
After VBS: Plan a family welcome activity and a small service project that gives children a concrete way to practice caring for others.

Kingdom of DavidBible history and God's characterConsider this when your team can support a longer daily session and enjoys teaching Bible history through role-play and activities.
Team demands: Higher coordination; plan tribe leaders, stations, role-play, and resets.
Main tradeoff: An immersive marketplace and tribe structure require coordination even when shop options are simplified. Review how the full lessons connect David's story to Jesus.
Space & supplies: Use fabric, crates, and clear station signs before buying elaborate sets. Distinguish dramatized dialogue from the biblical text when training volunteers.
After VBS: Continue with family readings about David and God's character, keeping the emphasis broader than personal bravery alone.

Return to Camp Moose on the LooseFollowing Jesus, forgiveness, and restorationConsider this when you want a connected Bible-character storyline and a classroom-centered week that leads naturally into ongoing discipleship.
Team demands: Moderate; prepared classroom teachers remain essential.
Main tradeoff: The lower reference kit price does not eliminate classroom preparation or the need to order materials for each child and age group.
Space & supplies: Borrow camp chairs, tents, and lanterns for an indoor campground. No real camping trip is required to make the setting meaningful.
After VBS: Continue Peter's story in children's ministry, with prayer, belonging, and restoration after failure as recurring conversations.

Safari ExpeditionGod's care, gifts, and forgivenessConsider this when younger children and accessible conversations about God's care are important to your church's outreach.
Team demands: Moderate; coordinate younger-child care and age-appropriate storytelling.
Main tradeoff: A multi-age plan still needs deliberate early-childhood attention. Teach provision without promising prosperity or immunity from hardship.
Space & supplies: Reuse greenery and explorer supplies, and connect stations with a simple trail map. Budget consumables separately from the starter samples.
After VBS: Invite families into a gratitude practice that connects recognizing gifts with caring for others.

Polar BlastJesus' enduring love; a shorter outreachConsider this when a well-supported weekend is more realistic than five consecutive dates, or when you want a compact first outreach.
Team demands: Fewer event days, but a complete supervision and station team is still needed.
Main tradeoff: Two days allow less time for teaching breadth and building relationships. Plan the next family invitation before the event begins.
Space & supplies: Use reusable winter decorations and a few strong focal pieces. Schedule check-in, child collection, setup, and volunteer breaks just as carefully as a full week.
After VBS: Connect the weekend to congregational life with the Sunday celebration, then offer a clear next step in children's ministry.

Decide what you want children to understand and what you hope families will do next. A doctrine-focused week, an immersive Bible-history experience, and a friendship-centered outreach are different choices—not interchangeable decorations.
Write down who can commit to each date and role. Count classroom teachers or crew leaders, station leaders, early-childhood staff, check-in, setup, and family follow-up. A smaller kit does not automatically mean fewer adults are needed.
Have your pastor or children’s ministry lead examine the Bible teaching, salvation presentation, music lyrics, and age-level explanation. Review accessibility, sensory needs, food allergies, and safeguarding before promising a particular experience.
Choose a meaningful family next step before VBS starts. A contact plan, a return invitation, and a prepared follow-up leader can matter more than one more stage prop.
Spend 5 minutes agreeing on ages and ministry goals, 10 minutes comparing two or three finalists, 10 minutes checking a real volunteer roster and equivalent budgets, and 5 minutes assigning sample review, final pricing, and a decision date. These are suggested planning steps, not a promise of results.
This guide compares eight announced options: Take Flight, Crave, Spy U, On the Boardwalk, Kingdom of David, Return to Camp Moose on the Loose, Safari Expedition, and Polar Blast. It is a selected comparison, not an exhaustive list of every curriculum available.
Start with your real teaching team, room capacity, ages, and event length. On the Boardwalk has a separate One Room kit for ages 5–12; Polar Blast is a shorter two-day program. They solve different problems. Neither a smaller curriculum nor a shorter event replaces appropriate supervision and safeguarding.
There is no fair single answer without choosing equivalent packages. In our reference bundles, Polar Blast is $134.99 for two teaching days. On the Boardwalk has a separate $109.99 One Room kit, and Spy U lists a lower-priced basic Starter Kit. These differ from the larger digital bundles. Lifeway’s $39.99 Directors Kit is planning material, not a comparable complete teaching bundle. Recheck prices before ordering.
Do not assume so. Kits often contain leader resources and student samples. Add the required age-level guides, per-child materials, crafts, snacks, printing, equipment, accessibility needs, promotion, follow-up, tax, and delivery to build your event budget.
Yes. Select up to three themes to compare their teaching emphasis, Bible translations, daily accounts, age coverage, format, kit price, and planning tradeoffs. Each theme also has an expandable five-day outline, or a two-day outline for Polar Blast, with links to publisher material.
No. Seven reference programs have five teaching days. Polar Blast has two teaching days; the publisher also describes a separate Sunday celebration. Adaptations should be checked against the director’s guide, not assumed to be the published format.
The supplied planning comparison lists Spanish options for Take Flight and Crave, but this guide has not verified a complete 2027 bilingual package for either. Check leader guides, student resources, music, and videos individually with the publisher. “Not verified” for another theme does not mean the publisher offers no Spanish products.
Classrooms need prepared teachers for the ages you serve. Crews need consistent small-group leaders plus station leaders. Count actual people and available rooms, not just curriculum roles. Plan early-childhood care, accessibility, check-in, and child collection separately in either format.

No. This is an independent El Roi Digital Ministries planning guide. We do not sell these kits here, and the outbound links in this guide are not affiliate links. Theme names and images belong to their respective owners. Review complete samples with your pastor or children’s ministry leader before selecting a curriculum.
El Roi Digital Ministries developed this independent guide from an October 26, 2026 planning review and checked the linked publisher and ordering pages on October 31, 2026. Package labels and prices are tied to specific listings; Safari Expedition’s reference price is a retailer quote. This is a point-in-time guide, not a live price feed.
The program-age and translation ranges begin with that planning comparison and are qualified where package coverage or release status needs confirmation. A broad program range does not mean one kit contains every age level. Unreleased translation downloads are labeled as announcements, not available inventory. Teaching outlines are summaries with Scripture references, not replacement curricula. Take Flight Day 3 correctly uses John 18–21, not the chart typo “John 18:21.”
“Consider this,” workload, decorating, and follow-up suggestions are our editorial assessments. They are not hands-on test results for all eight curricula, customer testimonials, or a ranking of spiritual outcomes. Read the editorial standards and Michael Gatica’s research profile.
Official theme images are used to identify the programs being compared and remain the property of their respective owners. No publisher affiliation or endorsement is implied. We do not offer the logos, paid curriculum, music, or leader guides as downloads. Use each publisher’s own resource links and permissions for your church’s materials. No affiliate links or paid placements are used in this guide.
Give your team a shortlist they can discuss, price, and pray through together.
